RMHC doubling bedrooms for growing need
April 21, 2021
As of March 30, 2021, the Ronald McDonald House Charities® across Canada will be adding 410 bedrooms to facilities to assist with the growing need to serve sick children. This expansion will “grow from 522 bedrooms to 932 through a capital investment of over $244 million.” Since RMHC of Canada only serves about 20% of the children they could be serving, this addition will help continue to work towards being able to serve 100% of the children who need RMHC in Canada. With only 16 specialized children’s hospitals in Canada, RMHC provides crucial support to these patients that has only since the beginning of this pandemic. According to Karima Karmali, “RMHC is a significant partner in supporting both family-centered care and the broader health care system in Canada, partnering with children's hospitals to help fill a gap in services that hospitals otherwise can't."
Before the start of the coronavirus, about 1.2 million children need consistent treatment at the hospital and about 55,000 utilized RMHC to help them stay closer, once the pandemic hit, that number dropped to serving about 10,000 leaving 45,000 without support from RMHC due to lack of resources and a decline in donations.
